Yearning to Learn: The Importance of Scholarship

Each year, Gamma Pi chapter sponsors more than $20,000 in scholarships to students entering college and to students for follow-on support. The scholarships are awarded in association with the Charles Drew Memorial Scholarship Program.  The Scholarship is open to all graduating Prince George's high school graduating seniors residing within Prince George's County.  The scholarships will be awarded regardless of race, sex, religious beliefs, or other non-merit factors, but the Scholarship Committee implores each member to find a suitable young black male applicant.  We are all aware of the plight of our young black men and their increasingly disproportionate representation on our nation’s college campuses.  However, we all can play a small role in addressing this disturbing trend.

The Four Founders of Omega Psi Phi made Scholarship a core aspect of the Fraternity's mission as it is one of the Four Cardinal Principles that define the Fraternity, weaving through every chapter and every member who comprise the body of Omega Psi Phi. After all, Omega Psi Phi was founded on a college campus and each of the Four Founders was involved in providing higher education opportunities to young African Americans, especially to young black men.
